King City United Church

Minister's personalized parking spot
Reverend Evelyn McLachlan of the King City United Church, on Elizabeth Grove in King City, has her own designated parking spot, in front of the church.   Judging by the wording of the sign there is no standing on formalities when it comes to the good minister.

Sushi Bar & Bistro to open in King City

New restaurant on Keele
King City's restaurant scene appears to becoming more interesting as the Paper Crane Sushi Bar & Bistro prepares to open on Keele Street, next to the Crawford Wells Emporium.   With so much new housing coming on stream and several commercial properties in the village up for sale or already changed hands, it seems the much-anticipated metamorphosis of the village (for better or worse) is well underway.

Capturing the moment...

A warm sunny afternoon in June,
Nasturtiums waving in a breeze,
A glass of chilled white wine,
This then, if we choose,
is a moment to look back fondly.

New secret spot at Seneca

Photos by Barry Wallace

I was bird-watching at Seneca College, on Dufferin Street, this past Saturday, and came across the sign, pictured at top, near the location of Villa Fiora ( Lady Eaton's first home in King  before Eaton Hall).   I knew the sign was a new feature and was curious to see what it portended.   Inside the adjacent cedar grove, pictured above, was an in-the-round art studio, equipped with several easels and a collection of paintings supplies.   Judging by the size of the easels, the painting being done here is created by children, and the setting is indeed magical.   Kudos to the creator of this simple but splendid venue.

St. Andrew's at Eversley is sold

The 164-year-old St Andrew's Presbyterian Church, on Dufferin Street at Eversley, has been sold.   The church is one of King Township's iconic landmarks and there is great curiosity in the community about its future use.

New grandchild

My wife and I just returned from an 8-day trip to Ottawa where we welcomed a new grandson into the world.   He was a couple days late but that meant my wife and I were able to spend bonus time with two granddaughters.   Mother and son are doing fine.   Back to taking pictures of King, on the morrow.

New King City railway underpass

A GoTrain passes over the new railway underpass north of the new King's Ridge subdivision, just east of the library, on the King Road.   The underpass connects Dennison Drive, north of the rail line and the new subdivision's Alex Campbell Crescent.   The underpass is split by a pedestrian walkway and a watercourse which drains into another small stream that parallels the rail track and flows under the pedestrian boardwalk, in the foreground of the picture.   Lighting for the underpass is provided by power from two wind turbines and three solar panels mounted on lampposts, either side of the tracks.   Probably an expensive installation, this infrastructure is one of the most important connections in providing King City with a contiguous walking trail system that can encircle the village.

Turkeys back at Round-The-Bend Farm

My wife asked me to drop into Round-The-Bend Farm for a quart of strawberries at the start of this week.   I also bought a "Roly-Poly' ice cream cone and asked the young lady who scooped my ice cream if the two barns that were to replace the ones that had burned down last year were almost finished.   She replied that there had been young turkeys in the  first replacement barn for over two weeks.   So what was a sad tale, that fateful day a year-and-a-half ago, finally has a happy and fitting ending.

Hunting the Emerald Ash Borer

Photos by Barry Wallace
Many Ash trees along the main roads in King Township are sporting the signs seen in the top photo, on their trunks, while what appear to be a triangular, green, box kite is suspended in the tree branches above the sign (lower photo above).   The project is an attempt to get a handle on on the presence of the deadly Emerald Ash Borer, which has decimated thousands of Ash trees in southern York Region over the past several years.   Below, a closer view of the insect trap shows many insects caught but only the experts can determine the presence and number  of the target insect.   The bottom photo shows a trap that was a victim of last Friday's punishing winds and rain.   More info is available at www.york.ca.

King grows upwardly

Schomberg ~ 126 units
King City ~ 138 units
Condominium apartment units in the two developments pictured above total 264 , which if occupied later this year by two people each, would add 528 new residents to the township.   528 new residents represents a 2.7% increase in population in just these two buildings alone.   'Oh the times they are a changin'.
