The Holland Marsh...home of rich muck

Photos by Barry Wallace
Growing over 56% of Canada's carrot needs
The Holland Marsh has the largest area of organic (muck) soil developed for agriculture in Ontario and operates one of the most intensive agricultural production areas in Canada.   In this area over 56% of Canada's need for carrots and over 60% of Ontario's onion crop is produced annually.   Its root vegetables are available for about 8 months each year, and increasing greenhouse vegetables are available for almost 10 months of the year.   Over 200 farms produce over $300million each year in farm cash receipts.

4 paved lanes over the East Humber River
...but for how long?
The bridge over the Humber River, at Kinghorn,  may look complete in this picture, but the southside 2 lanes (to the right in this photo) have yet to be refurbished and re-paved.   The project will reach into next year.

Cricket on Dufferin Street at Eversley...

Photos by Barry Wallace
The Maple Leaf Cricket Club, Canada's foremost cricket facility, at Eversley in King Township, has five cricket grounds, which are always active on weekends.  Cricket originated in 1598 in England, as a male children's game.   The Maple Leaf Cricket Club originated in the 1950s in Toronto.

A summer's worth of miniature tomatoes

The photos above show the September 11th reward of three different types of miniature tomatoes which I planted in a half barrel way back in the spring.  Darned if I know what went wrong, but I highly suspect a half summer of blistering hot temperatures and and a paucity of rain.   We do live in interesting times.

Dog Tales Sanctuary...

Photos by Barry Wallace
Farm critters on this unexpected visit
I drove by Dog Tales Sanctuary on Saturday afternoon and saw that the main gate was open and many cars were parked along the south side of the 19th Sideroad.   Even though it has been closed on the normal visiting day, Sundays, I thought it might be open for a special occasion.   I took a few pictures and quickly realized I was not getting photos of dogs or horses, but rather other resident animals, such as cows, pigs, and chickens.   Then I noticed that other than a few staff dog-walkers, I was the only visitor.   I asked one of the dog-walkers if Dog Tales was open and she said no.   The main gate was open to let potential dog adopters to visit, and that all the cars parked on the road were owned by folks visiting the nearby conservation area on the other side of the sideroad.   This will explain my selection of photos in this blog.

Oh yes, and a couple of frogs along the way.
