First steam train in King City and Aurora - 1853

The TORONTO
On this day 169 years ago, on May 16, 1853, The Toronto, the first steam train constructed in what is now Ontario, made its way from Toronto through Springhill (King City) to Machell's Corners (Aurora). The steam engine pulled four passenger and freight cars.    The train was owned and operated by the Ontario Simcoe and Huron Union Railroad Company.   The railway company name went on to be colloquially abbreviated to the 'OSH' Railway, and was locally referred to as the 'Oats, Straw & Hay Railway'.   The economic futures of King City and Aurora were immediately improved.
