Gingergold apples at Pine Farms Orchard 

Pine Farms Orchard has been open for apple picking for a couple of weeks already and although Gingergolds are seen in the photo above, it's the Melbas that are the ripest apples right now.   Pines Farms is located on the north side of the16th Sideroad halfway between Keele Street and Jane Street.

Country Apple Orchard Farm opens August 30th

Country Apple Orchard Farm opens Saturday, August 30th for picking.   It is also located on the 16th Sideroad (south side), just west of Jane Street, at the top of the first hill.

Eastern Tiger Swallowtail

This Eastern Tiger Swallowtail was spending much time at the dahlia flowerbed today.   It is in stage 4 of its life cycle, and here and now, it looks much the worse for wear.   It has gaping tears in its wings and a ragged rear-end where both of its distinctive swallowtails have been torn off.   Butterflies do not have an easy time of it in their late stages.

Ruby-throated Hummingbird

Unlike the Swallowtail above, this Ruby-throated Hummingbird is enjoying its summer with 10 nectar feeders to choose from in the backyard.   Seen above, it is approaching a brand new replacement feeder.   It has taken the several parent and adolescent hummers two weeks to work up there nerve to try this new feeder.   I guess they can afford the slow approach with nine other familiar feeders nearby.

   

Blackburnian Warbler

Passing through on its early southern migration to South America, a Blackburnian Warbler was once again the first warbler to stop off in the backyard cedar hedge.   For many years the Blackburnians have frequently been the first to pass through our King City backyard late in August.   Even in its early fall colours, it is a handsome bird.

King City Farmers Market at All Saints Anglican

The Sunday morning Farmers Markets in King City and Schomberg are popular spots.   If you've never attended these community gathering spots, there are only a few dates left at each venue to treat yourself to some wonderful products.   King City's market will run on Sept. 7, 21 and Oct. 5 at All Saints Anglican Church on Keele Street, just south of the King Road. Schomberg's market will take place on Aug. 30, Sept.13, 27 and Oct. 11 adjacent to the arena.

King's Den underway on Keele North

The small King's Den subdivision on Keele Street in north King City is finally underway.   18 homes will be built on the sight which sits cheek by jowl with larger and more costly homes to the west and north.   An original proposal showed much greater density than that underway.   Adjacent property owners objected strongly and the smaller units number was finally agreed upon.

New Scotiabank opens in 17 days

I see in one of the local newspapers that Scotiabank says it will open its new branch, on Monday, September 8, in the new shopping plaza on the north-west corner of King Road and Dufferin Streets.   Plaza construction, pictured above, has raced ahead lately.   I'm really look forward to driving 3 blocks to the new Tim Horton's, instead of trekking to Teston.

50th Anniversary ~ Shrine of Our Lady of Grace

This Sunday, August 24th, 2014, The Augustinians of Marylake will host a picnic celebration in honour of the 50th anniversary of the Shrine of Our Lady of Grace.   An outdoor mass (rain or shine) will be held at 11 a.m. and a procession, special blessing and unveiling of the new statue of the Madonna (pictured above) will take place at 12 noon.   Family picnicking will occur throughout the afternoon and entertainment and activities, for all ages, will take place.   A $10 donation per car or van will be collected.   Marylake is located at the north end of King City on the west side of Keele Street.   For more info, go to www.augustinians.ca or call 905-833-5368.

New traffic lights in the west - not in the east

I wonder why there are new  traffic lights in the west end of the village, on the King Road at the intersection with Burns Blvd. and Charles St., (photo above) where there are a new housing subdivision and condominium apartments.....while at the east side of the village there are no traffic lights on the King Road at the intersection of Stan Roots St. and Spring Hill Dr., (photo below) where there are new housing subdivisions on both the north and south sides of the King Road.   The east side of the village also has schools on both sides of the King Road in the east end: the public school on the north side and the new catholic school on the south side.   There is also a new retail plaza opening soon at the intersection.   I've heard that traffic lights here may be two years away.   One wonders what the rationale is.

Art Society King takes it to the streets

                                                                                                      

Jerry MacBain, of Nobleton, was working on Sunday installing new streetpole flags in King City. The flags are the co-operative work of the Township of King and Arts Society King and feature the creative endeavours of local artists.   The artwork Jerry was installing in King City (above) is by Bridgette Granton.   The artwork below is by Donna Greenstein, while at the bottom  Alexandra Conrad's art is featured.   Jerry MacBain has perhaps more than a passing interest in King's heritage as his great-grandfather was among the first settlers to inhabit Lloydtown.
