Out of the rain ~ into Sheena's Kitchen

Driving around Schomberg in the rain, late Saturday afternoon, wasn't as much fun as we thought, so my dear wife and I dropped into Sheena's Kitchen on Main Street and had some soup, salad and quiche.  Photo below (left) was taken by my dear wife Linda as we split an order of lemon cake after our quiches.   It was a wonderful alternative to the wet weather.   Photo below (right) shows the dear lady herself, Sheena (on the left), along with our table hostess, Gillian Bowers.

Road-ready farm vehicle

For starters, this farm vehicle has a top speed of 55 mph., so it doesn't slow down traffic on any road it happens upon.   Its ground clearance is so darned high, you can see what's in front of it just by looking underneath it, between its wheels. Its tires are very narrow for getting between crop rows and its overall height and ground clearance means it can ride above crops that have already started to grow tall.   This is definitely a modern take on the old days in King City when Elmer Cairns would regularly drive his tractor down from Marylake to do his shopping, banking, visiting and whatever else he required in the village.   There were others also who occasionally took the 'tractor into town'.   The photo was taken at the stoplight in front of the plaza and township offices on King Road.

New King City Farmers Market banners

King City's main streets have been festooned with new utility pole banners promoting the village's farmers market.   The next biweekly market day will be Sunday, July 5, in the Anglican Church parking lot on Keele Street, just south of the King Road.   Hours are from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.   Meanwhile the second Schomberg farmers market will be held at the Trisan Centre this Sunday, June 28.

Posto Panino opening soon

New restaurant close to opening

I took the photos above of Posto Panino in the new King's Ridge Marketplace in King City, on Wednesday of this week.   One of the installers told me it would be open by July 1st, while his partner said the 2nd week of July.   We shall see what we shall see whenever the time arrives, but it appears to be fairly imminent.   The newest eatery in the King's Ridge Marketplace has a sign in its window saying it has applied for a L.L.B.O. liquor licence.   Anticipation is mounting in many places.

Farmers Market opens in King City

Next King City Farmers Market ~ July 4th

The opening of the 2015 version of the King City Farmers Market, at the Anglican Church, began last Sunday morning with more vendors and customers throughout the morning.   In the centre of the photo above, Mayort Steve Pelligrini gets some assistance from local children with the cutting of the opening ribbon.   To the mayor's immediate right are Ward 1 Councillor Cleve Mortelitti and and Ward 5 Councillor Debbie Schaefer.   The next King City Farmers Market will be Sunday, July 4, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m..   The next Schomberg Farmers Market at the Trisan Centre is this coming weekend on Sunday, June 27.

Pan Am painted ponies in King

King Township is now home to six of the 20 fibreglass horses that have been painted by local artists to publicize the Pan Am Games equestrian events, later in June.   The fundraiser is called the Headwaters Parade of Horses.   Most of the equestrian events will be held in the Caledon area.   After the Pan Am Games the painted horses will be sold to interested buyers for $3,500.   The horse statue above is to be found at Winsong Farm on the 15th Sideroad, just east of the 8th Concession.   It is called Silhouette and was painted by Ellen Cameron.

New book by former King resident

The younger of my two daughters, Auralee Wallace, has recently had her first 'cozy murder mystery' novel picked up by St. Martin's Press (MacMillen Publishing) of New York.   The book is entitled "Skinny Dipping With Murder" and will be published in early 2016.   A second book, in the same genre, is almost complete and will be published by St. Martin's, later in 2016.   The two hardcover books for St. Martin's follow two online 'urban fantasy' books published by Harlequin: the first, in 2014, was called 'Sidekick', a humorous superhero urban fantasy, and a sequel to that will be released in October of this year. Auralee grew up in King City, attended King City Secondary School, got her undergraduate degree at the University of Guelph and her Master's degree in English Literature from York University.   She worked with me in the community newspaper industry for a few years before becoming a teacher at Seneca College, here in King.   She now resides with her husband and three children in a small village, just south of Ottawa.   When not writing best-sellers (hopefully), she is still playing soccer which she began as a child in King City.   Her two daughters and her son are following in their mother's soccer shoes.

Nothing so pretty as peonies in spring

My wife Linda looked over my shoulder as I uploaded these garden photos to my 'Camera on King' blogsite and softly said: "There's nothing so pretty as peonies in spring".   I couldn't agree more.....then there's that fresh floral fragrance that is almost too much.   Sometimes the perfection of nature is so completely simple and free.
