Tent Caterpillars moving south into King...

Tent Caterpillars are appearing in several places in King Township this summer, including Humber Trails Conservation Area, south-east of Nobleton (see photo above).   Northern Ontario is heavily infested this year during a peak cycle, and southern Ontario will probably be heavily hit in 2019.  There's not much to be done, it seems, but grin and bear it.

PINK WATER LILIES

AND

 TOUCH-ME-NOTS

I was driving on Keele Street north of King City, this past Friday and spotted the lovely pink waterlilies (pictured above) in the roadside pond on the Field farm and just had to grab a photo of these wonderful flowers on the lily pads.   I also noticed nearby a few large bushes covered in small pinkish-mauve flowers that looked suspiciously to me like small orchids.   I took their picture also (see below).   When I got home I called Carol Field, a friend going back to high school days, and asked her if she knew the name of these lovely flowers.  Carol told me they were not wild orchids, but rather, that they were 'Touch-Me-Nots' or 'Wild Balsam'.   I went online and discovered they are officially called Impatiens grandulifera and are also known as Indian Touch-Me-Not, Himalayan Impatiens, Himalayan Balsam, Policeman's Helmet and Ornamental Jewelweed.   Thank you Carol.

Interim King City library service starts Sept. 4

Kettleby's Priestley Demolition has almost finished the flattening of the old King City Library, pictured above, prior to construction of a replacement library and seniors centre scheduled to be finished in late 2019.   In the interim, library services in King City will be provided in the lower level of the seniors centre on Fisher Street, adjacent to the King City Community Centre (see photo at bottom).   Access to the interim library facility is best achieved from the community centre parking lot off Doctors Lane.   King City Library patrons can begin using the temporary facility beginning Tuesday, September 4th.

Dozens of big hibiscuses...

Linda and I have some hibiscuses growing in the back garden which have several 3" blooms, but they are nothing compared to the hibiscuses our neighbour George grows across the street.   George and his wife have dozens of plants in the front and back of their house and hundreds of blooms at any given time.  George's granddaughter is seen above with her grandpa beside one of the numerous 10" blooms, which is also pictured below.   The photo at bottom shows a plant with multiple blooms in the 8" to 10" range.They also grow in shades of red of purple.   The effect is almost overwhelming but wonderful.

Stretch of Keele Street gets a facelift...

A stretch of Keele Street (west side) in the north end of King City has received a very attractive landscaping treatment, bordering the new subdivision between McClure Drive and and Curtis Crescent.   Trees, shrubs and sod made a remarkable difference.

Trucks taking over...

It used to be that luxury automobiles, collectors' cars or antique automobiles had the best parking spots around town, but it seems big, big, expensive trucks are taking over.   The big white beauty pictured above, in front of Hogan's Inn, is a GMC Denali HD.   Below is a make I'd never heard of until I saw it being gassed up at the King's Ridge Plaza of Tuesday of this week.   It's a Sterling pickup truck which apparently has been out of production for a few years and is already a collectors item.

Eaton Hall Lake or Lake Jonda...

Here's a photo of Eaton Hall Lake (Lake Jonda) at Seneca College King I had not seen before.   I came across it on urbexbarrie.blogspot.com/.   The view is due south and although it appears to have been taken in the recent past, it does not show the new massive, multi-million dollar Seneca College Campus Magna Hall, which opens in September.

Mourning Dove's morning dip...

Mourning Doves use and seem to appreciate the backyard birdbaths as much as all the other birds that use them.   This hot summer has meant that the birdbaths are constantly being replenished.   It's a small chore though compared to the joy of watching a bird bathe.

Ferns losing the fight...

The ferns in the garden have put a good fight against this summer's scorching heat, but they are are starting to wilt, despite the attempts to keep them well-watered.  I hate to see them fading but it was a great show while they lasted.

Here's a photo taken several years ago on the Green Lane, between Weston Road and King's 7th Concession, near the Hydro tower-line.    These auto remnants were eventually scavenged and what was left ultimately disappeared, beneath a few years of the King Ridge forest's ground-cover.

Can you identify this bird

gathering nesting materials?

This small bird is in our backyard throughout Canadian summers and winters.  It eats insects and their eggs, plus spiders, in the summer, but eats seeds in both summer and winter and even take seeds from the human hand.   It's Latin name is Poecile atricapillus.

Answer: Chickadee
