Kinghaven Farms presentation at King Museum

Photos by Barry Wallace

Kinghaven Farms President, Jay Willmot, flanked by his mum and dad.
From Queen's Plate winners to greenhouse lettuce giant
Sunday, May 5th, at the King Township Museum, saw King Township's Jay Willmot, of Kinghaven Farms Limited, make a presentation on the brief history of the world renowned thoroughbred breeding and horse racing operation (with 5 Queen's Plates), just west of the hamlet of Laskay.   But that was followed by a much more elaborate presentation on what the 57-year-old Canadian thoroughbred breeding and racing stable has become in 2024.   The modern-day operation is now a huge, modern vegetable produce farm and greenhouse with a  quickly growing worldwide reputation for its specialized lettuce-growing operation in southern King Township.

Delmanor daredevil window washers...

Photos by Barry Wallace
After two years since its opening, Delmanor Retirement Residence in Aurora finally got around to having its outside windows professionally washed by expert workers recently.   The window washers rappelled from the 6th floor rooftop terrace, fascinating residents and other interested onlookers.

Here's to the farmers of King Township

Grandma Cairns (pictured above) was a distant relative of my late wife, Linda (Cairns) Wallace.  Cairns settlers began farming in the early 1800s on the west side of King Township where Cold Creek Conservation Area now exists.  - - - B. Wallace

Trumpeter Swans at Aurora Arboretum pond...

Photos by Barry Wallace
A pair of Trumpeter Swans  appears to have selected a spot to nest on the banks of the Aurora Arboretum large pond.   The swans are busy feeding but are also keeping their eyes on the spot they have chosen on the shore.   It seems to be the same spot they occupied last year.    A Red-winged Blackbird, below, was also eyeing the sight but was chased off by one of the swans, likely the male bird.
