Zinnias named for Johann Gottfried Zinn

 Photos by Barry Wallace
There's nothing like a bed of Zinnias to give any garden or border a remarkable splash of colour. The one pictured here is to be found on the south side of a private driveway, separated by a cedar hedge from the Paramedic Response Station (old firehall), on the east side of Keele Street South in King City.

More parking spaces at township offices

Photos by Barry Wallace
There are times, these days, when the parking lot at the King Township offices and adjoining retail stores, is completely full.   But a bit of relief has been created by the paving of several new parking spots at the rear of the municipal offices/plaza property.   Presumably, tenants will park in these new spots at the rear of the plaza, while an equal number of spots will become available at the front, for customers and visitors.   A small improvement, but an improvement nevertheless.

Bell tolls in closed Nobleton Church

 Photos by Barry Wallace
While driving north on Hwy. 27, just above the King Road, and passing the old and closed St. Alban's Anglican Church, I suddenly heard the former church's bell tolling in the tower.   I was momentarily amazed.   I passed the church but turned around and went back to investigate.   Two gentlemen were working on the fence, at the back of the one-time church.   I asked them if I had just heard the tolling of the bell in the tower. They laughed and said yes I had heard the tolling bell.   They explained a real estate agent was in the old church at the moment and that it had to be him who rang the bell, so it wasn't my imagination.   The deconsecrated church is being offered for rent as a redeveloped commercial site.   A tall and substantial fence has already been constructed between the old church and the adjoining community cemetery, to the west (see photo below).   The core of Nobleton is undergoing what appears to be a number of redevelopment projects, one of which is pictured at bottom.   It is the the Pringle Square Condominiums, located on the south-west corner of Hwy. 27 and Wilsen Road, just south of the old Anglican Church and a block north of the King Road.

King Heritage & Cultural Centre scenes

 Photos by Barry Wallace
A few things caught my eye on Tuesday when I dropped into the old museum in Kinghorn.   The first thing I had not seen before was the the mammoth boulder near the road with a Toronto Carrying Place plaque attached to it.   There are a few others of these plaques placed in York Region as markers for the historic portaging route from Toronto to Lake Simcoe, which includes a lengthy section in King Township, up and over the King Ridge.   Another scene that caught my attention was the continuing construction of the grand stone terrace (pictured below) at the rear of the KHCC.   The stones are huge and the work is painstaking.   This new feature looks to be very impressive and useful for outdoor gatherings.   The two photos at the bottom of this blog show two of the artistic works in the current ASK summer art show.   The first is a watercolour, entitled Floral Rhapsody by Evangeline Munns, while the second is an oil-on-canvas, called Royal Crown by Ileen Kohn.   The transition from museum to a heritage and cultural centre is a work in progress for everyone concerned, but the future of the facility promises new, stimulating and fascinating opportunities under one roof for historical and cultural pursuits.

Out and about the township...

Today's colour is red
I was out and about this past week looking for things to photograph and started with the red currants pictured above.   On Thursday, I picked seven quarts of red currants in my backyard and Linda and I made red currant jelly.   Then I got a shot of one of King City's fire trucks.   Other red things also caught my eye and they are pictured below.

Pizza at Posto Panino

Linda and I dropped into Posto Panino, in the King's Ridge Marketplace, on Saturday afternoon for an early dinner.   It was my second visit and Linda's first.   On this occasion, I tried the Toscana Stone Pizza.   Except for the mozzarella, it was basically a vegan or vegetarian pizza, including tomato sauce, artichoke hearts, roasted red peppers, sun-dried tomatoes and green olives on an excellent, thin crust.   There was only one word to describe it: delicious.

Percherons at Windy Hill Farm

 Photos by Barry Wallace

Whenever I drive past Windy Hill Farm, on Keele Street just south of Hwy. 9, I always eagerly anticipate seeing Windy Hill Farm's percherons.   Two of the mares and their offspring were close to the road on Friday morning of this week and I pulled the Jeep over to the shoulder of the road, grabbed my camera and moved close to say hello.   The mother and son pictured above were very cooperative and patient in posing for me.   What magnificent creatures, but then all heavy horses are special to me.   The percheron was originally bred in le Perche, a district of northern France, as a powerful breed of cart-horse.   They are usually black or grey (or somewhere in between), but it is mostly the black percherons that I have been familiar with throughout my life.   My maternal grandfather used one on his small farm, south of Barrie, back in the mid-1950s.   I'm known to say now and then, that I became a man on the day I first harnessed a team of my grampa's horses.   I was 14 years old and Maude, the percheron, was one of the two horses.

Crowd at Cardinal

Rain fell on and off all day on Friday of this week but the practice tees at Cardinal Golf & Country Club, on Highway 9, were busy all afternoon.   There were lots of umbrellas and rain jackets as golfers perfected their swings.   King does love its golf.

New signage at museum in Kinghorn

New signage has replaced the old King Township Museum sign on the north side of the King Road in Kinghorn, just east of Jane Street.   The sign reflects the fact that Arts Society King and the King Township Archives are now housed in the same building as the museum and the King Township Historical Society.   Recent renovations and landscaping are transforming the location into a very attractive and functional facility which will extol Kings history, arts and culture.

The Coppa's Fresh Market food store in the new King's Ridge Marketplace in King City is underway, as indicated by the footings in place in the photo above.   The store is being constructed by The Conarch Group and original reports said the 50,000 sq. ft. store would be open by mid-2016.
