This familiar-looking butterfly, known as the Camberwell Beauty is native to Eurasia, where in addition to being called the Camberwell Beauty, is also known as the 'Grand Surprise' and 'White Petticoat'. The same butterfly is also widespread and native to North America, including Canada, and is called the Mourning Cloak (Nymphalis antiopa). It lives for a very long time (up to a year). It is also the state insect of Montana ... and also visits our garden regularly.
