Regular visitors to the Cawthra Mulock Nature Reserve, on Dufferin Street, south of Ansnorveldt in the Holland Marsh, are advised to not enter the property due to its official designation as a sensitive wetland restoration area, where work is already underway by Ontario Nature, Ontario Heritage Trust, Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority and York Region.   Entrance to the same property is available off Bathurst Street, 1.5 kms. to the east, where the the Oak Ridges Moraine Land Trust office is located (see photo below).    

A new crushed limestone trail has been constructed at the reserve which leads to the pond (see photo below), where Snowdrops and Mayapples have begun to bloom.

Event was cancelled - but sap kept running

The Cold Creek Maple Syrup Festival fell victim to the Covid 19 crisis, but the maple trees at Cold Creek had been tapped and the sap had been running well, so the King staffers at Cold Creek have been making maple syrup anyway.   The township doesn't sell the syrup it makes so it will probably be given away to deserving recipients.

Here's a sign I've never seen before

This sign can be found on the 8th Concession of King Township, southeast of Schomberg.   I've seen lots of turtle crossing signs in and around King Township but this is the first one I've seen that asks us to give a snake a brake also.

One-time King City 'good old boy' Rod Bell, from the late 1950s, sent me this internet photo that he thought might lighten the load of these troubling times.   Rod's father was the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce in King City, back when Rod and I were teenage schoolmates at Aurora District High School....a mere 60 to 65 years ago.

Handcrafted of fibre and hair (dog) by Blair Acton Burrows, c. 1950.   Not only was Blair Burrows a skilled and artistic craftswoman in the last century, she was also an avid golfer, skier and skater, as well as an insightful home builder, who created a 'rammed-earth' (mud) house upon the King Ridge, on the 6th Concession.

As the King Heritage and Cultural Centre continues to develop, new features continue to be added,   such as a selection of cultural items pictured above, which include history books, postcards, stationery and collectible plates.   A spokesperson told me there is a plan to have an actual gift shop in place next year.

This healthy-looking raccoon appeared to be on patrol in front of a couple homes in the heart of the hamlet of Kettleby on Monday.   There were cars passing by and other activity nearby, including home renovations, but the 'coon was nonplussed.   It eventually went into one of the backyards and disappeared from my view.

I have no idea how brisk business was for this young girl in King City on Sunday afternoon, but she got $5 from me and I got a bottle of hand sanitizer just as I was heading to the coffee shop, which was packed.   You can't be too careful in this day and age, I suppose.

Tuesday afternoon visitor...

The first Red-winged Blackbird of the season showed up in the backyard on Tuesday afternoon.   It was followed by a Grackle shortly thereafter.  The Starlings were not impressed to see either of these early March arrivals.   I'd better get some more birdseed.
