The temperature was just over 30C when I drove through the Holland Marsh around noon on Thursday and I couldn't help but notice these pickers were covered from head to toe with clothing, plus they were all wearing paddy hats. Not only do paddy hats (which have many other names) protect against the sun, but they are also used as rain hats. Wet straw paddy hats, when soaked with water, also serve as air conditioning devices.
