The Roost Cafe is now open in King City

The Roost Cafe is now open at 12974 Keele Street, just south of the four corners in King City, and across the street from the All Saints Anglican Church.   Operating hours are from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m.   A complementary business, The Farmhouse Shoppe, is to be located in the same historic building but doesn't begin operating until the summer.   My coffee, by the way, was excellent and the blueberry muffin was exceptionally tasty.

Studio Tour King preview exhibit ~ Apr. 5 - 20

Pictured here are three of the over 30 works which are being previewed, from Apr. 5 to 20, as part of Arts Society King's STUDIO TOUR KING, which is to be held on Saturday and Sunday, April 23 and 24 (10 to 5 p.m.)   The selection of works being previewed can be seen at the King Heritage & Cultural Centre (2920 King Road) on Tuesdays to Saturdays between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Goldie Feldman Nature Reserve...

One of King Township's best walking/hiking trails is located at The Goldie Feldman Nature Reserve, just west of Weston Road at 4093 17th Sideroad.   The well-marked entrance is on the south side of the sideroad.   Trail information is well presented for visitors (see photo immediately below).   Winter hopefully has given us its last this week and the trails here will now be bare and safe for all.

Numerous young birch trees kept their orange leaves all winter and made for striking photo contrasts.   Pictured below, right, is a shot of of White Birch trees, alongside what I think are Yellow Birch trees.   The two  kinds of trees are very similar in appearance, but one has a much darker bark colour.   If trees are your thing, Happy Valley is the place to be.   Photographers are also invited to shoot photos from a marked station on the trail (see photo below, left)  and upload their photos to Nature Canada to be retained as part of a database recording the visual environmental and habitat changes at the reserve.

Spring scenes between the 6th & 7th of King

Klaus Wehrenberg

As I was taking photos for this blog entry, a small party of hikers passed by and the group included Klaus Wehrenberg, a.k.a. 'Aurora's Trail Man'.   Klaus was the man who worked harder than anyone, for 26 years, to see the creation of Aurora's Master Trail Plan.   On this day however, he was enjoyed himself in King on the Oak Ridges Trail.   We walked side-by-side for a couple of hundred of metres and Klaus reminisced about helping to make the Aurora Trail Plan a reality.   He touched on the pragmatic nature of creating something to suit everyone in a large municipality but turned a little wistful as he mentioned his personal yearning to have seen an environmental creation with more esoteric considerations.   The man seems to be a pragmatist and a purist...but content at that.

Inspirational brushes with art

Over 35 exceptional local artists working in oils, watercolours, acrylics, pastels, ink, graphite, photography, bronze, clay, ceramics, soap, wood, glass, textiles, leather, jewellery, print making, collage, and other mixed media, will be featured in the Studio Tour King art show, produced by Arts Society King.   The weekend art tour will be held on Saturday and Sunday, April 23 & 24.   A preview showing of the artists' work is to be held in the King Heritage & Cultural Centre between April 5th to 20th (excluding Mondays and Sundays).  Go to ArtsSocietyKing.ca or phone ASK for details (905) 939-9357.
