Bond Lake Trail ~ north side - Oak Ridges

I've walked around Bond Lake many times, particularly in the spring, summer and fall, but rarely in the winter.   On Sunday I walked the north part of lakeside trail with my camera. For the first time, I spotted someone ice-fishing, although I'm sure it has happened from time to time, over many years.   I had to really admire this fellow's intrepidity, given the temperature, the wind, and the snow flurries.   Then, as I walked along, I spotted some ancient structures, in the trees, not far from the trail.   I had never spotted them before, because they were likely hidden by the trees and bushes, in full leaf.   There are pictures below of some of them.   They left me imagining...

Oak Ridges Moraine and Oak Ridges Trail are well-named.

Jaguar rally in King City ~ circa 1960

Clearview Motors hosted Jaguar rally starts

Clearview Motors, on Keele Street South in King City, was the starting point for a number of auto rallies, run by the Ontario Jaguar Owners Association in the early 1960s.   King City resident Gerald Gamble was on the club executive and was responsible for King City playing host to the events.   Clearview owner, Ken McQuarrie, who was an aficionado of all things automotive, benefited, no doubt, from filling up all those 'Jag' gas tanks.   Ken McQuarrie went on to own Clearview Motors for 50 years before retiring in 2016.   Below, is how the the old Clearview Motors looks today under new ownership in 2017.

Old photos ~ King City & Maple

Here are a couple of historical photos I don't think I've ever seen before.  I came across them online at a site called ELocalPost.  In the photo above, an unidentified woman is seen pumping a glass of water for a child in King City. Judging by the car in the background, I'd say the photo was taken between 1910 and 1920.

In the lower photo, taken in 1909, the view is looking south, on the east side of Keele Street, in Maple, in Vaughan.   In 1852, the village was named Noble's Corners, after Joseph Noble, the first postmaster.   Later, a Doctor Rupert who lived in the village, was such a respected member of the community that the village's name was changed to Rupertsville.   The name Maple, was apparently adopted later, in recognition of the numerous maple trees found along Keele Street in the village.

Pictured above and left is St. Stephen's Anglican Church,  

which was built in 1895.   The church is now 122 years old and is a local landmark because of its red colour.The Parish of Saint Stephen's, itself, was founded in 1836.

Another first for King City epicurians

I've lived in King City for over 60 years now and I think I can say without a doubt that King City has never had a Mexican restaurant.   That's about to change it seems.   The sign pictured above suddenly appeared this week in the spot where the sign for the former Diserati's Italian Bakery used to be.   I guess I should polish up my spanish for opening day: "Buenos dias, senor.....cerveza por favor".
