New sign for King Township firehall

Pictured above is the new sign in front of the Township of King's Nobleton Fire Department and Emergency Services, on the King Road, a little east of Highway 27.   It's a startling difference, but entirely appropriate, from King's other pale green municipal signage.

Cold Creek gates open 6 days a week

If you haven't visited the Toronto Region Conservation Authority's Cold Creek Conservation Area (now under the auspices of the Township of King's Parks, Recreation and Culture Department) then you may not be aware that the gateway to the grounds is now open six days a week between 8.30 a.m. and 4.30 p.m. (see new sign above).   Outside of these hours, one can still access the conservation area but you will have to walk in from the gateway on the east side of the 11th Concession of King (halfway between the King Road and the 15th Sideroad).   Visit the Township of King's website for activities at Cold Creek.   In the photo below, a number of adults and children enjoyed their time around the fire-pit behind the Education Centre, after the snow/ice/rain storms this past weekend.   The sun came out for a while and temperatures warmed up enough for a good time to be had by all. including warm drinks and treats.   The gates were open this Sunday to accommodate the private function.   Groups reserving time on Sundays have the option of the gates being open or closed.   Snowshoes and Cross-country skis are available at Cold Creek, but it is recommended that folks give the Rec Dept. a call to check on availability.

Sewage pumping plant or top-security prison?

The new sewage pumping station on the west side of Hwy. 27, at the south end of Nobleton has three strands of barbed wire atop the surrounding chain-link fence.   I don't recall seeing this security treatment on installations of this type elsewhere in the villages.

Scenes from the day after Boxing Day

The Laskay Hall has a new sign, courtesy of the township...overdue, but much appreciated.

Snow fence, seen above on the south townline has been under-utilized so far this winter.

Il Giardino Toscano Italian restaurant (above) is the dining room that replaced Daniel's of Nobleton, alongtime favourite eatery of many King Township diners.   Many years earlier, this building was the home of the Nobleton Press printing shop and the King Township Advertiser weekly newspaper and the York-Simcoe Farm Weekly newspaper.   Prior to that, before the 1960s, the building housed a very successful apiary.

Above is one of two gargoyles that flank a driveway on the 7th Concession of King, north of the 15th Sideroad.   This creature appears to have a nasty pain in its tummy.
