New King City Trail bridge over the Humber...

Although access to the King City Trail, west of Keele Street, just south of the Humber River, is barred by yellow hazard tape, the new footbridge over the river is finished and is being used every day by walkers, hikers, birdwatchers and other naturalists.   People are just stepping over the warning tape, going down the unsafe steps, and enjoying the trail and the river.   Colours are bursting forth and so is birdsong.

First goslings of the spring...

Linda and I spotted this Canada Goose family on Dufferin Street, just south of Hwy. 9 and the Glenville Pond, on Wednesday of this week.  There were three goslings and they were the first we had seen in King this spring.   No doubt they are plenty of others out and about the township this week.

New King City Library

Above is the new King City Library under construction on the north side of the King Road, opposite the King City Secondary School.   Below is a view of the rear of the new building showing both upper and lower floors.

The view above shows the central staircase, under construction, between the the upper and lower levels of new structure.   An elevator will also connect the two levels.

White-crowned Sparrow shows up...

A White-crowned Sparrow has finally showed up in the backyard,  in this late-starting (weather-wise) spring.  Now, the one and only (so far) White-throated Sparrow will have some company.   Below is a photo I took,  a little later in the spring a couple of years ago, of the two different sparrow species side-by-side.   They make for an interesting pair, I think.

Spring grosbeak welcomed...

Linda and I don't get many grosbeaks in the backyard, but can usually count on one or two each spring and at a few other times in the summer and fall.   We had a Rose-breasted Grosbeak show up this past Friday but its visit was short as it didn't want to compete with starlings at the feeders.  They are such a wonderful sight when on the wing.  Those flashing black and white wings, and red throats, are so eye-catching and compelling.
