What the heck is a Belgian Malinois? This sign is posted on a Dufferin Street gateway, east of Kettleby. One can't say one hasn't been warned, can one? The Belgian Malinois is also known as the Belgian Shepard. There are four versions of this canine (see photo at bottom). From left to right there is the Belgian Malinois, the Belgian Laekenois, the Belgium Tervuren and the Belgian Groenendael.
Wikipedia says the Malinois is used as a working dog for tasks including detection of odors such as explosives, accelarents (for arson investigations) and narcotics; tracking humans for suspect apprehension in police work; and search and rescue missions. The U.S. Secret Service uses Belgian Malinois to guard the grounds of the White House in Washington.
Allegedly, the Belgian Malinois is the dog that helped in the hunting down and capture of Osama Bin Laden.
