Door decoration at Delmanor Retirement Residence...

Above is a new and colourful door hanging appearing at a resident's apartment at Delmanor Retirement Residence on Yonge Street in Aurora.   It graces the apartment entrance of its artistic and skilled creator, 90-year-old  Margaret.  The work is a resplendent quilted endeavor measuring over four square feet and features an African elephant.   It's extraordinary craftsmanship by an extraordinary woman.   Well done, Margaret!

Mr. Chen celebrates his 100th birthday at Delmanor Retirement Residence...

Photos by Barry Wallace

Mr. W. M. Chen celebrated his 100th birthday on February 1, 2025, at Delmanor Retirement Residence on Yonge Street in Aurora.   Pictured above is the smiling centenarian about to celebrate with a glass of wine, and behind him on his right is his daughter, also a Delmanor resident and on her left, is my friend Pat Cromie, another Delmanor resident.   In the picture below, and also seen above on the table, is one of 100 chocolate candy boxes which Mr. Chen's family distributed to each diner in the Delmanor dining room and pub during his birthday lunch.   It occured to me, that few us get to live into a 2nd century and the occasion is therefore quite noteworthy!   Best wishes in your second century Mr. Chen.

So eloquent...

"If I were to run, I'd run as a Republican.

They're the dumbest group of voters

in the country.

They believe anything on Fox News.

I could lie and they'd still eat it up.

I bet my numbers would be terrific."

'All My Sons' at Richmond Hill Curtain Club...

Cast was stunning in Miller's classic

My partner Pat and I attended opening night of the Curtain Club of Richmond Hill's recent presentation of the Arthur Miller classic drama 'ALL MY SONS'.  Not unexpectedly, the play was grim and depressing but the performances by the 12-member amateur cast, who reportedly had spent three and half months rehearsing this play, were outstanding.   The final scene of the play climaxes with a loud, off-stage gunshot, that takes the life of one of the main characters.   At the end of the play, I leapt to my feet, shouted "BRAVO!" and applauded wildly.   Many in the audience around me shouted bravos also and many gave a standing ovation to the cast taking its bows.   It was a sobering play, but it was an inspired and brilliantly presented production.   It was local community theatre at its best!

Swimming pool at Delmanor in Aurora...

Above is a photo of my close friend, Pat Cromie, enjoying some swimming pool exercise at the Delmanor Retirement Residence on Yonge Street, in Aurora.  Pat and I are usually in the pool  three times a week for swimming exercise classes and leisure swimming.   The water temperature is always warmish plus there is a hot tub!

Don Valley Parkway Deer...

Photos by Barry Wallace

Pat and I visited friends of hers who live on the Don Valley Parkway in mid-town Toronto on January 28 and I took these photos from her friend's dining room window.   Two White-tailed deer were resting on a flat spot on the fenced-off steep embankment beside the Parkway and her friend's back porch.   At the time, there were six lanes plus an off-ramp lane full of speeding north and southbound vehicles roaring by.   The two deer appeared not to have a care in the world.   Later in the day, a fellow Delmanor resident  who had lived in a home perched atop a spot on the Don Valley for many years, said the Don Valley was always full of deer, including several bucks with 8  and 12-point antlers.   She felt this was true of all the river valleys in Toronto, from the north city limits down to Lake Ontario.

As of January 22nd this year,

Toronto has had 19 cm. of snow

while New Orleans has had 24 cm. of snow.

Yeah...?

Above is photo from several years ago when my dear wife Linda and I lived in her grandmother Glass's farmhouse in King Township, a few kilometeres north of Toronto.   With the right equipment, the snow was removed the same day.   No big deal.

Terrific Wedding Invitation...

Here's the front page of a wedding invitation my partner Pat received recently from a granddaughter of hers.   What a charming photo!

I couldn't help but think back 60 years ago to the wedding invitation  for my dear but deceased wife Linda and I.   What an incredible difference the decades have made to something that seemed so traditional and plain, ages ago, to something now with animated photography, humour and colour.

Delmanor welcomes exotic critters...

Photos by Barry Wallace
Delmanor Retirement Residence in Aurora received animal visitors from 'handsonexotics' recently, which included Pippa (above), a Red-tailed Cockatoo from Australia.   Pippa brought many smiles and laughter to Delmanor residents, pictured below...

Shelly, a ten-year
old Red-footed Tortoise from
Asia, (above and
at left), fascinated
Delmanor residents

while exploring the living Well Centre non-stop.  This heavy tortoise will have a lifespan of 200 year.

Above and at left
is Lara, a ferret and popular European pet animal, that sleeps 20 hours a day.

Above and at right, is Ravioli, a bug-eating lizard from Australia that is also called a "bearded dragon".
It can change its colours to blend in with rocks.

Delmanor residents, Pat Cromie (above) and Ron Thornton (below) get up close and personal with 'Stinky', a North American Corn Snake.

At left, perched atop
a compliant Delmanor resident's head,
is a South American Chinchilla,
named Cocoa, the softest animal
in the world.

Never-before-seen photo of my sister Denise...

Many thanks to my cousin Judy Thomas for passing along this (never-been-seen-before photo, by me)  of my sister Denise and her husband, Fred Georgekish, taken long ago.   Fred, a native Cree Indian from the Quebec side of James Bay, passed away several years ago.   Denise now lives in a seniors nursing home in Montreal.   Denise, in her high school  days in King City, Ontario, was once a prom queen.   Love to you and happy Valentine's Day my dear.

"HMS Pinafore" - 64 years ago...

This  photo was taken 64 years ago at a dress rehearsal of Gilbert & Sullivan's operetta HMS Pinafore at Aurora & District High School.   That's me, on the right, in the role of Captain Corcoran, being somewhat outranged at the effrontery of a mere 'tar' speaking to a captain's daughter on board one of the British Royal Majesty's ships.   The photo and a description of it are a part of a memory project that my oldest daughter Alliston has launched me on, reflecting on a myriad of events in my life which I found notable.   The moments can be illustrated with art or photos, but I never expected to come across this photo from over six decades ago.   As a matter of fact,   Allison found it amongst some junk papers that I was about to dispose of!

The project I am completeing is available online, and asks for responses to many questions about one's life.   It is a available to anyone who is interested in giving it a whirl.  The questions are the same for all who try it.   The more I get into it, the more I'm getting into it.   We shall see what we shall see.
