18th Sideroad ~ near Pottageville...

Located just west of Pottageville on the 18th Sideroad is the onetime Second King Baptist Church.   The church dates back 172 years to 1848, and celebrated its 125th anniversary in 1973.

Today, the structure has been designated under the Ontario Heritage Act.

Bond Lake ~ hiking trail disruption

Public access prohibited on Bond Lake Trail

I was surprised recently to see signs (pictured above) on the western side of Bond Lake, just off Yonge Street in north Richmond Hill, saying that "Public Access is Prohibited" and that the area is now patrolled and that the area is  an "Environmentally Sensitive Area".   Although boot-prints in the snow would indicate that the signs are being ignored by some, the fact of the matter is that it must be a frustrating disappointment for hikers that truly appreciate this nature trail.   The lake and the shoreline trail are getting more and more visitors, like me, from the King City area and many other parts of York Region, and prohibiting access is a major blow to walkers, hikers and bird-watchers.   What a shame.

An ancient Toronto and York Railway building on the Bond Lake shore has become a recent latter-day target for graffiti artists.

Toronto Region Conservation Authority workers visit the site to do forest management maintenance.

Hand-crafted bower pops up at Lake Wilcox...

The park lands at the east side of Lake Wilcox has been transformed in recent years with incredible investment in community infrastructure that include new park and recreation areas, a boardwalk, many sculptural artworks, picnic areas, a huge recreational centre, among numerous other amenities.   In this particular location, it appears that a public citizen has created a personal work of art, using materials from the site, to create a lakeside arbor.   Charming in its own way.

Schomberg Road in Oak Ridges???

The Schomberg Road in Oak Ridges is a replacement street that was constructed after the Aurora and Schomberg Railway discontinued its service between Schomberg and Oak Ridges after its 26-year service that began in 1902.   I do not know exactly how long it took the former railroad bed to be turned into a pedestrian, horse and buggy, and automobile thoroughfare.   This part of Oak Ridges, in northern Richmond Hill, has always been quite marshy as the East Humber River passes through here as it makes its way from Lake Wilcox westward through southern King Township.  It probably took considerable time and effort to create a new and wider roadbed than the steam engine train had required.

How long will it remain standing?

King Township residents have wondered for years about the ultimate fate of the Great Barn at Marylake, north of King City.   It has been falling apart for years and one wonders if it can be saved at all.  Kelly Mathews, Manager, Sport Venue Operations and Community Recreation at Seneca College in King, is about to publish her new history book of King Township.   Previous publishing efforts by Kelly were greatly praised when she wrote "Eaton Hall - Pride of King Township" and "The Road to Marylake".   Perhaps her new book will informatively predict the future of Marylake's rural masterpiece.
