King Road and Jane Street at Kinghorn...

If you are a regular driver through Kinghorn, either getting to or coming from Hwy. 400, or heading south on Jane Street to Maple or York University, you know only too well how long replacement of the bridge decks over the East Humber River, at both the King Road and Jane Street have taken.   Both projects began in April of this year.   The 2-lane Jane Street bridge (the smaller of the two projects) is predicted to be completed in the fall of 2020.   The 4-lane King Road bridge, a much larger project is planned to be finished at some point in 2021.   A Region of York public notice states that the King Road will be reduced from from four lanes to two, accommodating traffic in both directions while bridge work is being completed.   Construction will cease in fall 2020 to spring 2021, during which time all four lanes of traffic will be re-instated.

Cars still cross bridge built in 1916

over the Pottageville Creek

Ancient short sections of the old Lloydtown~Aurora Road are found on the east and west sides of the old bridge, which is found on the north side of the present-day road, west of the 7th Concession.   Vehicles still cross the old bridge, including mine last Monday.

Redevelopment on Schomberg Main Street...

Photos by Barry Wallace
Here's a construction project on the west side of Main Street, in Schomberg, that I've only just noticed in the last week or so.
It is opposite The Grackle Cafe and the Schomberg Pub & Patio.   Eric Moon at the Township of King offices, told me the building permits for the site include residential and commercial premises.   It would appear that commercial space would occupy the ground level and residential units on the upper levels.   Thanks for the update Eric.

Saturday morning at The Roost...

Photos by Barry Wallace

Any place you'd rather be?

A social gathering or a cycling group, The Roost appeals to many on a sunny Saturday morning on Keele Street.  Meanwhile, up on the deck, overlooking the pastoral back garden, a few like me are reading the Globe and Mail and enjoying cappuccinos or having a pleasant tête-à-tête with someone special.   Life is good on Keele Street.

Purple Loosestrife making a comeback?

Photos by Barry Wallace
Driving the concessions and sideroads around King this summer, I'm seeing a lot of Purple Loosestrife plants, along the roadsides, that I haven't noticed in recent years.   Purple Loosestrife became a big problem in Ontario many years ago as it took over wet areas including roadside ditches, where the stands reduced nutrients and space for native plants and degraded wildlife habitat.   In 1992, Canada and the US. approved the release of two European leaf-eating beetles that are natural enemies of purple loosestrife and feed primarily on the plant.   The effect was to reduce loosestrife populations by up to 90%, allowing native plants to re-establish.   It may be time to re-think this strategy.

New Library & Seniors Centre get signs...

Photos by Barry Wallace
King City's new library and seniors centre both received their new signage at the yet-to-be finished municipal complex, on the King Road opposite the high school.   This will alert brand new residents to the village that the swanky looking building is not a new steak house and dining lounge, but is the new and long-awaited public educational and social facility.   I have asked but have not been told when the finished, highly anticipated premises will be available to visit and be used.   I noted with interest that depending on the direction of the sunlight and one's own viewing position, that the shiny metallic lettering sometimes disappears and does not allow for easy identification, especially for those driving by.   Needless to say, the exact opening date is greatly anticipated.
