Bond Lake power station ~ circa 1899

Toronto Archives Photo

Built on Yonge Street, on the west side of Bond Lake, approximately 123 years ago, the 1,000 hp. Bond Lake Power Station provided power to the Yonge Street rail line but also provided surplus power to some nearby communities such as King City.   Remnants of the facility can still be seen today, as pictured below.

Laskay Hall moved to Kinghorn 5 years ago

Photos by Barry Wallace
Laskay Hall was built on the 6th Concession of King (Weston Rd.) in 1859, by the Sons of Temperance and became the home of the Laskay Women's Institute in 1910.  It was moved five years ago and is now a key part of the King Township Museum complex, on the King Road at the west end of King City.  The photo below shows Laskay Hall making the turn from Weston Road and heading to Kinghorn in 2018.   Below that is Laskay Hall, 159 years later, as it appears today in Kinghorn.

Garter Snakes should now be in a warm place...

Time to hibernate for Garter Snakes
Garter Snakes usually hibernate in October are now likely underground somewhere trying to stay warm.   They may be over-wintering alone or in a hibernaculum with more than a hundred, or more, other snakes and staying there until spring.  They will coil themselves into a ball, not eat anything and stay in a state of torpor throughout the winter.

Plaque in the middle of Lloydtown...

Transcription:
'For 100 years a blacksmith's shop at this site was at the hub of Lloydtown.   The blacksmith was arguably the most important man in pioneer communities.   There were several blacksmiths in Lloydtown during the 1800s. Shoeing horses and repairing the metal rims on wagon wheels was very hard on a man's back, so the blacksmith could only work for about a 10-year period.   The large double doors in the front of the shop were used to post notices of local news such as farm auctions, social events, and reward posters for rebels.   When the main shop was dismantled in the 1930s, it was noted that the big doors had hundreds of nails from the postings of the last 100 years.'

I've photographed this sweet-looking creature on another occasion and again I feel he or she may have no sight in its right eye.   Nevertheless, it seems to be quite content in its rural pasture.
