Sun halo over James Bay...

Above is a dramatic selfie-photo taken by my niece, April Dawn Gull in the Cree village of Wemindji, on the shores of James Bay in northern Quebec.   My congratulations to April for dexterously capturing this shot of herself beneath a sun halo on her cell phone.

Turning the pain of litter into the joy of spring

Say thanks to Don and his buddies
I took this picture on Keele Street, just north of the Oak Ridges Trail last Thursday.   It shows Don, an employee of York Region, who was out collecting debris and cleaning  up the roadsides on York Region roads.  Anyone making note of the before and after appearances of roads like Keele has to be saying a big silent thank you to Don and his comrades for regional roadside cleanliness.

Spring activity underway in the Marsh...

Onion seedlings are in the ground and covered with plastic (above top left) to protect against a possible one-last spring low damaging temperature.   Below, another type of seedlings remains in temporary plastic greenhouses before being transplanted.

Trilliums - Oak Ridges Trail

Earth Day
'I travel the roads of Nature until the hour when I shall lie down and be at rest; yielding back my last breath into the air from which I have drawn it daily, and sinking down upon the earth from which my father derived the seed, my mother the blood, and my nurse the milk of my being - the earth which for so many years has furnished my daily meat and drink, and, though so grievously abused, still suffers me to tread its surface'.

At Dog Tales...

Photos by Barry Wallace

Whenever I drive past Dog Tales Sanctuary on the 19th Sideroad of King Township, I must admit it is the big horses that catch my attention before the dogs do.   When I was 13 years old, I spent a year on my grandfather's farm and he taught me to drive his work horses.   I never the got over the experience.   65 years later I have great memories of that time.

GO Transit going to two tracks through King...

Photos by Barry Wallace
Preparations are underway to install a second Go Transit line from Toronto to King City and to Barrie.   The photo above, looking south-west was taken from the Bathurst Street overpass.   The photo below shows a southbound train about to go under the Keele Street/King Road overpass.   The bottom photo shows a Go Train heading north from King City across Station Road.   The Barrie Go Transit expansion will offer all-day, two-way GO train service from Lake Simcoe to Lake Ontario and everywhere in between.

New Dog Tales facility already a landmark...

Photos by Barry Wallace
So impressive is the design and setting of the newest development at The Dog Tales Sanctuary on the 19th Sideroad of King, that the development is already a township landmark to many passersby.  Predicted at one time to open in December of last year, the project is still under construction and an opening date has not been settled upon.   The 54,000 sq. ft. facility and services are situated on 48 acres of the Dog Tales's 100-acre property on the King Ridge.   The facility will offer multiple veterinary services with advanced technological equipment, including MRI and CT scanners.   Veterinary care to emergency surgery, with an animal holistic centre plus underwater therapy for dog and horses will be provided.  It stated some time ago that the open-to-the-public animal hospital would operate on a 24-hour basis.

Lurking in the woods of King Township...

These two formidable golden lions are to be found guarding a country property on
the 16th Sideroad of King Township.
They are an eye-catching pair but I believe them to be harmless.

Beautiful home torn down - only 44 years old
Pictured above is the last part of a large home that was demolished last week in King City.   This is not unique in the village.   Several homes have met a similar fate in the last year or so.   Homes built in the 50s, 60s and 70s are being demolished regularly to make way for monster homes.   I admit there are times when I am absently-mindedly driving through the village's ever-changing older subdivisions and I forget momentarily where I am or what street I'm on.   A friend has told me that the demolished home lot pictured above, is to be the future site of next year's Princess Margaret Hospital Home Lottery prize and will be somewhere between 6,500 and 7,000 sq. ft. in size.   Larger visible home numbers will be necessary, I think.

Temperanceville church became Eversley barn

A church 162 years ago - now a barn
Situated on Dufferin Street, just south of the of the King's 16th Sideroad, sits the one-time Temperanceville Presbyterian Church, which now serves as a converted barn.   The original church was built on Bathurst Street in 1958.   The first service was held on September 25, 1859, and the last service was held  52 years later in July of 1912.   The church building was soon converted into a private residence.   Almost 60 years later, in 1971, the former church building was designated to be demolished for road construction.   The historic building was saved however by Dr. Michael Willinsky, who owned property on the west side of Dufferin Street, north of Eversley.   Dr. Willinsky purchased the structure, and took it down, plank by plank.  Then an old-fashioned barn-raising was held on his property to restore it.   The restored building was very attractive and strongly resembled the original church.   Today it is home to ponies, goats and burros, among other creatures.   Long may it continue to provide creature comforts.   Many of the details provided above are from Elizabeth McClure Gilliam's  Early Settlements  of KING TOWNSHIP  Ontario, published in 1975.

Fishing in the Marsh...

Once the Easter Monday church services were over, there was a mad rush to all parts of the Holland Marsh earlier this week, as hundreds of men, women and children sought out their favourite spots to wet a line.   I didn't see anything being caught however.

And it all goes up in smoke...

Highway 9 and 6th Concession

What do a hundred thousand pieces of firewood look like?   I have no idea really.   But the scene on Highway 9,  just west of Weston Road, might be what it looks like...or maybe there are a half million pieces there.   Who knows?   It's one heck of an operation, as the photos here show, and they only show a part of it.

...and it operates year-round
