A photo for dog-lovers...

Border Collies
These Border Collies do not live in King Township, nor was this photo taken in King Township.   But there is a King connection going back many years.   My one-time sister-in-law, Robin Eagleson, who took this photo, lived in King City many years ago.   I just had to include her photo in my Camera On King blog because it is such a great shot.   Robin and Craig Eagleson and their two Border collies (at right above) live in Newmarket and were visiting friends who have four Border Collies, in Palgrave.
Robin took this perfect photo of the six dogs while their owners and the pooches were out on a walk.   Great photo, Robin!

Cold Creek Conservation Area ~ 11th of King

Photos by Barry Wallace
My grandchildren's great-great-great grandfather Cairns settled here 188 years ago.
King Township's Cold Creek Conservation Area, pictured above, is where my late wife Linda's great grandfather William Cairns settled, after emigrating from Scotland with his older brother Adam Cairns in 1832.  The plaque pictured below tells the story of the Adam Cairns homestead that was created here.  The plaque also shows a map of the area where the Cairns settlement occurred, including an adjoining farm taken up by Adam Cairns' brother Jonas Cairns.  The homestead plot is marked by six boulders and a plaque, just south of the Cold Creek Wheat Barn.

Young Hairy Woodpecker puzzled by feeder

Photos by BarrytheBirder
A first-year male Hairy Woodpecker (Picoides villosus) tries to figure out how the feeder works, but is reduced to hanging upside down to find a way.  Even some advice from a Chickadee didn't help.   It eventually gave up and moved to other feeders nearby in the backyard.

Sumach ~ one of a kind locally...

Canal-side in the Holland Marsh
The Sumac is a small tree of the cashew family.   Its compound leaves, conical fruit clusters, bright red/orange/yellow fall colours, and its small tree size make it contrast sharply but pleasantly with other trees in our treescapes.   It is found everywhere in King Township including along the banks of the Holland Marsh canals, where the photo above was taken.

2nd visit to the bottom of the 11th of King...

This is all that remains of the vehicle bridge over The Humber River at the bottom of the 11th.   At one time cars could drive over thebridge from King into Vaughan.   And also at one time (decades ago) I used to drive my Jeep into the Humber River, drive around this ancient bridgework and continue down into Vaughan.   My dearly departed wife, Linda, never liked that river-crossing manoeuvre.

This soaking wet pooch greeted me in the parking area, at the start of the southern trail.   He was soaking wet - from the tip of his tail to the tip of his nose.   He had obviously been in the Humber River, moments earlier.   His owner came upon the scene and told me the dog's name was 'Tater', as in 'potater' (potato).   He added that his dog before Tater was called 'Spud'.   I hesitated to suggest that he might want to call his next dog 'Chips' or 'French Fry'.   Man and dog were a friendly and charming pair.

Views of the Humber River along this trail show the Humber to be a much broader river than the East Humber River is in other parts of King Township.
