Trees of Giving at Museum

Trees of Giving is the name of a fund-raiser and christmas tree art show at the King Township Heritage & Cultural Centre, in support of the King Township Food Bank.   Trees have been decorated by various King community groups.   Visitors to the Heritage and Cultural Centre have until December 17 to visit and view and vote for their favourites.   Voting is done by donating a loonie, or more, for your favourite.   All proceeds go directly to the King Township Food Bank.   Three of the ten specially decorated trees are pictured here.   The participating community groups have outdone themselves in spirit and creativity ... a fascinating and charming presentation. I suspect the artistic flair of Elsa Ann Pickard in connection with this fine idea.

King's Ridge ~ a village within a village?

Spot for kids in King's Ridge
This sign has been displayed at the King's Ridge Marketplace for several weeks and would seem to indicate that a Montessori school is to become a tenant in the new retail shopping centre in King City.   It's interesting how King's Ridge Marketplace is morphing into something other than just a shopping centre.   It seems like it is becoming a village within the village of King City.   I suppose the right combination and contrast of vendors and service providers can give a place an aura above and beyond the obvious commercial aspect.

It's been four years of skateboarding

Photos by Barry Wallace

It's been almost four years since the skateboard park, on Doctors Lane in King City, has been completetd.   Kids began using it before it was even finished back in 2014, and it remain immensely popular to this day.

The minister arrives in style

Photos by Barry Wallace

Kettleby was the setting this past Sunday for part of the Anglican Christ Church's 125th year of service to the village.   The church was built in 1891 at a cost $3,000 and recently had its Norman tower restored to its former glory.   The minister on this day, the Rev. Sheilagh Ashworth, arrived in a most traditional fashion, perched on a buggy seat under a warm blanket.   Some visitors of the day got in the spirit of the occasion by wearing attire thought to be appropriate for the event.   One such person was King Township Councillor Debbie Schaeffer, pictured at right.

New Italian eatery in King's Ridge Marketplace

A new Italian eatery by the name of enoteca motorino has steel up in the King's Ridge Marketplace and will probably be open in the spring  of 2017.
There is an original enoteca motorino which opened in Vaughan a few years ago and has been very successful.   Go to www.motorinoenoteca.com to see the current menu's offerings.

Bathurst Street goes over the King Ridge

Photos by Barry Wallace
HUGE PROJECT FINALLY FINISHED

Bathurst Street, dividing King Township and Newmarket, between the Miller's Sideroad in the south, and the Graham Sideroad in the north, has finally been completed and traffic using Bathurst Street can bypass Aurora, Newmarket and Holland Landing by using the new road pictured here.   The top photo looks north as Bathurst Street descends to floor of the Holland Marsh before intersecting with Yonge Street, just east of Bradford.   The two bottom photos look south and show the climb up over the King Ridge, atop the Oak Ridges Moraine.

Time for Tamaracks

TAMARACK
Larix laricina

Mid-to-late November is the time of year, when this tree, also known as the American Larch, springs up across the landscape of dark green conifers and grey, leafless deciduous trees.   The name Tamarack is thought to be of Algonquian origin. The scene above was shot on the south side of the Lloydtown-Aurora Road, near Pottageville.

Getting over Shingles is a pain

I've been laid low for a few weeks with a bout of Shingles.   No fun.   Lots of pain. But I am on the mend and looking forward to chatting with you soon.
Best wishes, Barry

Colourful Kettleby and its mill pond

Here's is a copy of an old colourized postcard that I came across online this week.   I saw it on a website by Penelope Morrow, a former resident of Kettleby who now lives in Barrie. In the past she was a contributor to the King Township Sentinel newspaper for five years.   Many folks will recognize the photo as an oft-seen black and white photo, but for anyone who has not seen this colourized version before, it does give a somewhat intriguing appearance.

Three favourite family history photos

Here are three of my favourite family history photos.   As it happens, they are all from my wife's side of the family.   At top is Bertha Wells, who early in the 1900s became a nurse and traveled the Manitoba prairies practicing her calling.   I love the young niece dressed up in her auntie's nursing gear.
In the 2nd photo, on the left, is John Scott. a great, great uncle of my wife, Linda.   John lived on a farm at Mary Lake, now home to the Augustinian Monastery, north of King City.   He was accidentally blinded in one eye when he was 10 years old.   While recuperating, he swam in Mary Lake and contracted an infection in both of his eyes.   As a result, he became blind in both eyes.   As a young man, he was befriended by an itinerant preacher, David Moore, who became a lodger with the Scott family.   He and John became fast friends for 60 years, but never saw each other.
In the 3rd photo is another great, great uncle of my wife, who settled on the Manitoba prairies in the late 1800s.   Until I saw this photo, it never occurred to me that settlers rode bicycles on the prairies.

Bathurst Street ~ before and after

 Photos by Barry Wallace
Shown here are three photos, looking south at part of the Bathurst Street reconstruction and extension between Miller's Sideroad and Graham Sideroad, in the Township of King.   Northbound traffic on Bathurst Street can now take the Morning Sideroad across to Holland Landing.   Very soon, northbound traffic on Bathurst will be able to go north to the Graham Sideroad and Hwy. 11, near Bradford.   This connection will finally open up Bathurst Street after decades of being closed atop the King Ridge.

After a decade of ongoing restoration, Dorio's Italian Bakery (the longtime Kettleby General Store) has completed numerous interior renovations and structural and services upgrades.   Now, beginning this November, a makeover of the principal facade will begin, with completion by Christmas.

King City Post Office is expanding

 Photos by Barry Wallace
More homes and businesses mean more mail
The expansion of King City Post Office, on Doctors Lane in the heart of the village, is underway.   The photos below show the new footings of the expansion at the north-west corner of the existing building.   The 1,800 sq. ft. expansion is scheduled to be completed by the end of November.   All existing functions of the post office will be enhanced by the additional space.
