Anyone know what this is?

I think it's a headlight dimmer

I took this picture earlier this week at the Pine Farms Apple Orchard on the 15th Sideroad, north of King City.  The headlight is on the right fender of what I'm guessing is a 70-year-old 1951 Chevrolet sedan.   The upper halves of both headlights have been covered by metal black-out covers, screwed onto the top half of each headlamp housing.   I remembered that this was a tactic employed in Britain in the second world war, to keep from drawing the attention of enemy aircraft flying over England.   In those days, or rather nights, the headlight baffles covered a lot more than half the headlight, to maximize the effectiveness of the ploy.   I'm not sure how an early 50s Chevy came to have a similar feature.   Anyone know the answer to this curiosity?

Kathleen Fry

Friends and associates of Kathleen Fry, King Township Museum Curator for the past 16 years, gathered and filled the Pine Farms Orchard Gallery, on King's 16th Sideroad, north of King City, to extend their thanks and best wishes to the devoted public servant, on Thursday afternoon, August 29th.   The farewell retirement tea, including refreshments, was hosted by her friends at the King Township Museum Archives and the King Township Historical Society.   Kathleen and her mother now reside in a new home in Barrie, Ontario.

Intersection improvements are well underway at the King Road and Weston Road intersection at the hamlet of Laskay.   In the top photo a new long collector lane can be seen heading east up the hill to the lights at the intersection. Traffic control of commuters should be greatly improved before long.

Tricolour Water Lily at the Field Farm...

What a treat to see this wonderful water lily, above, in Carol and Bob Field's lily pond on Keele Street north of King City.   It combines shades of white, pink and red for a special presentation of itself.
Nearby, on the shores of the pond are several Impatiens grandulifera plants (at right), also known as 'Touch-Me-Nots' or 'Wild Balsam'.   To me they look like small orchids.

These gentlemen from the King parks department are seen putting the finishing touches on the new access stairway to the walking trail along the East Humber River, behind St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, on Keele Street North.   It took quite a while for the restoration, but many thanks, guys.

Keele Street ~ Kettleby

A Kettleby barn ... re-invented

This attractive building has replaced an old barn on its Keele Street property and while it is certainly oozes a barn image, I suspect it to be something more pretentious than a working barn.   It is just one of many new impressive buildings being erected on this very large private property, which seems destined to be a King Township landmark in the not too distant future.

Daylilies delight us...

I'm not sure that I have ever picked daylilies and put them in a vase before.   Why bother I suppose, when they wither away at the end of the day, and are replaced with new blooms in the flower bed the next morning.   I just wanted to see how they would look grouped together with their array of many colours.   Pretty, yes?

Closed until next year ~ sadly

Just as I was hoping Robintide Farms, just south of King City, would be open until the fall harvest was over, the popular market garden has closed until next year.   I was thinking it might be the place to buy our hallowe'en pumpkin this year.  The strawberries we got there this year were the best looking and tastiest I've ever had.

Dropping in for gelato at Dorio's Bakery

Want to get hand-scooped ice cream in a cone?   You still can in Kettleby, at Dorio's Italian Bakery.   Today I switched to orange gelato for a delicious change.  They have about eight flavours...all so tempting.   There are several pictures and paintings of the old bakery in Dorio's, but today I spotted one I had not noticed before.  It was partially obscured by a large potted plant.   It was a painting of the old bakery by the late, local and well-known Canadian water-colourist Jake Mol.   I moved the potted plant and got a photo of the painting which you see below.   Lovely colours and an interesting perspective, I believe.   Have a peek at it the next time you drop by for hand-scooped ice cream or gelato, in a cone or a cup.

Heritage & Cultural Centre closed until fall

The small sign (above) is what greets casual visitors to the King Heritage & Cultural Centre in Kinghorn this summer ... and just when things seemed to progressing so well with the latest overall facilities development.   No doubt, however, it will be worth the wait.

King City ready for 8 storeys in village centre?

This billboard at the northeast corner of Keele Street and King Road in the centre of King City, shows a proposed development for 'Luxurious Condo Residences, Prime Retail, Restaurant and Office Space' in structures that appear to be as high as eight storeys, just a stone's throw from the old historic bakery.   This should create a stir!

The site is diagonal to the Hogan's Inn on the southwest corner of Keele St. / King Rd. intersection.   The photo below shows the cleared site from the seniors apartment complex at the west end of Dew Street.
