Part of the Oak Ridges Trail...

Photos by Barry Wallace
Ed Miller Side Trail ~ north of King City

Strong winds over the past several months have taken a very noticeable toll on larger trees (see above and below) along the Miller Side Trail, north of King City, but the people who have maintained the trail have kept it clear and stable.   As I took the picture below of a tree that had resisted fierce winds, there were constant cracking noises coming from the split in the  trunk as it was moved by the wind.   The split in the trunk went far down into the roots   The inevitable seem to be warning me.

First Turkey Vulture of 2021...

I spotted my first Turkey Vulture of the new year on Sunday, February 28, soaring above the old Tannery Hill Farm, at Kinghorn, on the north-west corner of the King Road and Jane Street.   In just over 31 years of tracking my bird sightings, I have gone from seeing Turkey Vultures a few times in the months of July and August, to seeing them regularly now  between early March and late November.   So from 1990 to 2021, I have gone from regularly seeing these huge birds for 2 months in the summer in the early 1990s to seeing them regularly now for 9 months of the year.   What is the reason?  Mainly,  it's global warming.   Many bird species, in fact are extending the  amount of time they spend in Canada in the spring, summer and fall.   Food, especially road-kill in the case or Turkey Vultures, seems to be plentiful.

What a beauty...

I asked about this horse's colour.
My friend and one-time King City resident, and regular reader of this blog, Zoreh Zand, has replied to my question, of Feb. 10, about this horse's colour.   She contacted Dorita Peer who passed on the following info to Zoreh.

To the English and French - Chestnut
To cowboys                        - Sorrel
To Hungarians                    - Yellow
To Germans                       -  Fox

Thank you ladies.

What is this colour called?

I spotted this beauty on the 16th Sideroad of King, but wasn't sure what colour it was.   Is this what is known as a sorrel?

In the Holland Marsh...

Here is a sign I spotted in the Holland Marsh last week while I was out looking for Snowy Owls.   I didn't see any 'Olds' automobiles nearby, but that's not to say there may not be some classic Oldsmobiles stored away in old nearby vegetable barns.

Temperanceville United Church

Photo above by Barry Wallace
Over 212 years in the making...

As a sixty-five year resident of King City, I have been in several United Churches in York Region, but Temperanceville United Church, on the northeast corner of the King Road and Bathurst Street, was never one of them.   I hope to change that in the future, when 'Covid' is brought under control. What prompts me to visit was seeing the picture above, of the chancel and nave, on the church's website.   The shapes and arrangement of the pews captured my interest, which I have to see for myself.
It was the Protestant Reformation that brought about pews in church sanctuaries and 'in-the-round' seating that placed worshippers on three sides of the stage, thereby keeping the focal point on the cross, altar or communion table.   The style of seating layout creates more intimate worshipper engagement by placing everyone as near as possible to services.   Thus sight and sound are enhanced for all.

Above is one of the several ancient gravestones beside the Temperanceville United Church.   It recalls Michael R. Saigeon who died in 1847, at the age of 83 years.   He was a native of Main, France, and was born in 1764.
