Greetings from Parry Sound...

Deer eat Bob and Nancy's birdseed
My brother Bob who lives north of Parry Sound with his wife Nancy, tells me he is being kept busy this winter by local deer waiting at his backdoor for him to fill the birdfeeder with seed.   Meanwhile, I have to settle for squirrels in my King City backyard.

5-level advanced veterinary clinic at Dog Tales

The new Dog Tales Sanctuary advanced veterinary care clinic, on the 19th Sideroad of King, between Dufferin and Bathurst Sts. is scheduled to open later this year.   The new 54,000 sq. ft. development, on five floors, will include the most up-to-date technological equipment including MRI and CT Scanners plus a hyperbaric chamber.  Dog Tales has become a world-reknowned dog rescue and horse sanctuary, created by the husband and wife team of Rob Scheinberg and Danielle Eden.

At Cold Creek Conservation Area...

Here's a lovely scene from Cold Creek taken just a couple of years ago.   We look forward to seeing this scene repeated next winter perhaps...after we've seen the last of Covid 19.

Jane Street ~ north of Kettleby

One thing King is known for is a multitude of wrought-iron gateways in the township.   Many are large and bold, but this one caught my eye because of the artistic and delicate design of the metal with which the gate's two halves are graced.

East Humber River at King Creek...

-9C / January 20th / open water!
An unfrozen East Humber River is seen flowing under the Mill Road bridge in south-central King Township.   Today I spotted a Kingfisher as it flew from beneath the Mill Road bridge and headed upstream.   And it's only 59 days until spring!

The Marylake 'spruceway'

All photos by Barry Wallace
Anyone who has walked or driven into Marylake, on Keele Street, north of King City, recently or over the last many years, will recognize the summer scene above.   The long drive is bordered on each side by monumental spruce trees creating what has become a landmark.   Unfortunately, time takes a toll and many of these decades-old spruces are past their prime and are being blown down (see photos below).   One is left momentarily wondering what is to become of this arboreal treasure.

Immediately above and below is the latest spruce blow-down on the road into Marylake.

The spruce pictured immediately above is still erect but the tree's needles, bark and limbs, and most of its trunk are dead.

Holland Marsh Canal...

Mild temperatures keep the Holland Marsh Canal open in places which continue to attract  fishermen, who take up somewhat precarious positions on the frozen sides of the canal.   I pass by this spot every day while out birdwatching and see people starting to fish and others ending their fishing.   I have yet to see anyone catch anything.  Somebody must be catching something, otherwise why would they show up everyday for the last three weeks?

King Road ~ King City

The classic dormer window, from the late 1800s, pictured above, is found on the old home that is now the office of Anna Raeli State Farm Insurance.   The house is believed to date from 1889 when it was occupied by David Blough, auctioneer.  The extreme version of this dormer is typical of the times.  There are few like this remaining in King City, unlike Schomberg which has many of them.

Northern end of Bathurst Street in King...

Photos by Barry Wallace
Pictured above is the northern terminus of Bathurst Street and the northernmost point of King Township.   The scene is 5 kilometres north of Highway 11 (Yonge Street), about halfway between Bradford and Holland Landing.   I arrived here on Wednesday morning, after having spotted clear skies and SUN! well north of King City.   Not having seen the sun for what seemed like two weeks, I decided to head north.   It was sunny at the end of Bathurst Street but clouded over again before I turned around and headed home.   I took a couple pictures (see below) of the 'religious' marina on the Holland River, at the end of Bathurst Street. The Holland River stretches, from this point, another 6 kilometres north to Cookes Bay on Lake Simcoe.

Pictured at right is a scene at the end of Bathurst Street which shows the skies being clouded over once more, thus ending my search for sunny skies.   Oh well, maybe tomorrow.
