Carrot Harvesting in Holland Marsh...

There are enough carrots grown in the Holland Marsh, within its 7,000 acres, to provide every single Canadian
with 4 pounds of carrots!

Purple Loosestrife bouncing back?

Purple Loosestrife comeback?
As a daily birder around central York Region, I am seeing  more Purple Loosestrife than Purple Finches.   It surely looks like an invasive comeback is underway.   I see it mostly starting to clog up roadside ditches all over.   No doubt the Region of York will be on top of this quickly and launch an attack on one of the most damaging, invasive plants, with a previous serious record hereabouts, and nip the invasion in the bud.   Too bad it's such a pretty damned plant.

Oak Ridges Moraine view from my balcony

Photos by Barry Wallace
This is the southern view from my 5th floor balcony at Delmanor Retirement Residence, on Yonge Street in Aurora, Ontario.   I moved here from my King City house, about six months ago and am nicely settled now.  The view is the same from the large bay window in my living room and bedroom.  Below is recent photo of Delmanor itself.
Delmanor is located on Yonge Street at the south end of Aurora, bordered by Oak Ridges Moraine forest on the south, west and north sides.   I love the setting and the birdwatching.

Kayaks in the Holland Marsh.

Photos by Barry Wallace
Two well-geared kayakers were photographed in early August paddling south on the East Holland River Canal, bordering Pumphouse Road, in the King Township part of the Holland Marsh.   The Holland Marsh occupies just over 2,800 hectares and is primarily organic soils.   The canal is just over 28 kilometres long, which encircles the marsh.   The Holland Marsh Drainage Project started in 1925 and took two years to complete.

The York Region Experience
 Trail Marker Project
In York Region, the York Region Arts Council has installed the first of two installations of the York Region Experience Trail Marker Project, a collaborative interactive art project designed to re-connect people on the land presently known as York Region through art.   The piece, The Butterfly, pictured above is by aboriginal artist Donald Chretian, of Newmarket, and is an outdoor presentation beside the King Heritage & Cultural Centre at Kinghorn.   A second piece, The Bee (below), is to be found in Aurora, at the Aurora Town Park, at 49 Wells Street.   The unique style and impact of Aboriginal fine artist Donald Chretien springs from his combined passion for colour and woodland-style expression.   On ongoing exploration of his heritage has him concentrating on distinct features of Ojibwe clans with acrylic on canvas.
