TREES
The Oak is called the king of trees,
The Aspen quivers in the breeze,
The Poplar grows up straight and tall,
The Peach tree spreads along the wall,
The Sycamore gives pleasant shade,
The Willow droops in watery glade,
The Fir tree useful in timber gives,
The Beech amid the forest lives.

Daughter of English poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge

Saturday morning, Sept. 24 ~ Aurora, Ontario
I called my sister Diane in Halifax, early Saturday morning, to see how they made out with Hurricane Fiona. She seemed not to have slept all night, was close to tears, almost intelligible, and without power. The hurricane was officially cited as the worst ever to hit Nova Scotia. Hang in there, sis.

Where is it?
This mysterious monolithic structure mentioned in yesterday's blog is located in the northeast corner of the parking lot at the rear of Thompson's Funeral Home, at 530 Industrial Parkway South. It appears to be an ancient remnant from the railway bridge over Yonge Street.

Where is this located?
This monolithic structure is completely encircled in a small spot in Aurora, behind a chain-link fence with a tiny oval blue plaque. Do you know what it is and where it is located? Its location is to be revealed tomorrow.

One the notable trees at the Aurora Arboretum is the large Glenleven Linden, pictured at top, and below that is a plaque commemorating the historic Willson Homestead (1884-1964). Marshall and Rebecca Willson were among the first settlers on this land. The plaque installation occurred in 1998.

CLOSE TO Hallowe'en
Hallowe'en is the evening of October 31, the eve of All Saints' Day. Hallowe'en is of pre-Christian origin, being associated with Samhain, the Celtic festival marking the end of the year and the beginning of winter, when ghosts and spirits were thought to be abroad. It was adopted as a Christian observance, involving the dressing up and wearing of masks, and was particularly strong in Scotland. These secular customs were popularized In North American in the late 1800s by newly arriving immigrants (particularly from Ireland) and later developed into the custom of children playing treat or treat.

The plaque above is to be found halfway along the south side of the Kettleby Road in the historic King hamlet. The photo below shows the the original structure in the hamlet before it was moved to Black Creek Pioneer Village in Toronto in 1968, where it was later converted into the Pioneer Village Printing Shop..
