CLOSE TO Hallowe'en
Hallowe'en is the evening of October 31, the eve of All Saints' Day.   Hallowe'en is of pre-Christian origin, being associated with Samhain, the Celtic festival marking the end of the year and the beginning of winter, when ghosts and spirits were thought to be abroad.   It was adopted as a Christian observance, involving the dressing up and wearing of masks, and was particularly strong in Scotland.  These secular customs were popularized In North American in the late 1800s by newly arriving immigrants (particularly from Ireland) and later developed into the custom of children playing treat or treat.
