Hunting the Emerald Ash Borer

Photos by Barry Wallace
Many Ash trees along the main roads in King Township are sporting the signs seen in the top photo, on their trunks, while what appear to be a triangular, green, box kite is suspended in the tree branches above the sign (lower photo above).   The project is an attempt to get a handle on on the presence of the deadly Emerald Ash Borer, which has decimated thousands of Ash trees in southern York Region over the past several years.   Below, a closer view of the insect trap shows many insects caught but only the experts can determine the presence and number  of the target insect.   The bottom photo shows a trap that was a victim of last Friday's punishing winds and rain.   More info is available at www.york.ca.
