King Township History book launches...

'The History of King Township'  by Ann Love  and Sharon Bentley was launched on April 24 at the King Township Municipal Centre, before an enthusiastic gathering.   Pictured below are the two authors and myself.   Ann Love is on the left and Sharon Bentley is pictured on the right.   I am now the proud owner of three of the history books, two of which I will be gifting to my daughters, Allison and Auralee, who were born and raised in King Township.  My late wife was born a Cairns.  The Cairns name in King Township dates back 190 years to 1835 when Adam Cairns became a homesteader on the 10th Concession of King, north of the King Road, on land that today is part of Cold Creek Conservation Area.

At right, I am seen, with longtime friends of mine and authors of the new King history book, Ann Love, left and Sharon Bentley, right.

The new King history book can be purchased at the King Cultural Centre, on the King Road, at Kinghorn, just east of Jane Street.
It will also be available at the King Township Municipal Offices in King City.

Daffodil Diorama in Aurora's Field of Gold...

Residents of Aurora are once again to be treated to a panoply of daffodils  alongside the Tannery Creek valley in the Aurora Arboretum.   The splendid array of daffodils (which are a yellow-flowered narcissus) is to found slightly northwest of the Aurora municipal office building (where parking is available), off John West Way.   Access is also available east of the Aurora Family Leisure Complex on Industrial Parkway North.   The arboretum can also be accessed, on foot, on the southeast corner of the St. John's Sideroad and Industrial Parkway North.

Easter tradition at Delmanor...

Photos by BarrytheBirder

Residents of Delmanor Retirement Residence in Aurora were delighted to watch seven chicks hatch from an onsite incubator at Easter.   After a few days of adjusting to their new world, the chicks were released from a pen and allowed to wander about in a hallway, much to the delight of a throng of onlookers.   In the photo immediately above, the chicks are seen being herded by Delmanor staffers Rachel and Tiffany and Arianna.  The chickens were then loaded up and returned to the nearby farm from which they originated.

Knitted afghans for the kids and grandkids...

My partner Pat, at Delmanor Retirement Residence in Aurora, has just finished knitting the afghan seen above (one in a series of ten) that she has gifted to daughters, granddaughters and other female relatives over the past few years.  Each afghan was completed with wool made in Turkey over the course of several weeks, and recipients were asked in advance for assorted desired colours.

The pieces are considered by some to be instant heirlooms and are treasured by recipients.   Are there more to come?   Only time will tell.   Nice work Pat.

Newest resident at Delmanor in Aurora...

Mourning Dove
The newest resident at Delmanor Retirement Residence in Aurora is a Mourning Dove which has nested and is presumably sitting on eggs upon a light fixture above the front door of the building's east entrance.   Mourning Doves (Zenaida macroura) are probably the most abundant and widespread of all the doves and are found in a wide of habitats, including it seems, the entrances of large buildings.   They are very attractive birds with their subtle mottled colouring and their call is a mournful 'oowoo-woo-woo-woo' .

My first Tilley Hat got too heavy...

I came across this oldtimer in the top of a closet recently.   It's my first Tilley Hat.   It's decades old.   Over the years I realized the thing to do was to stick your Tilley Hat full of small commemorative medallions - which I did.   The problem was that over time the hat became so heavy that it hurt.   I had to give it up.   At the time, the hat had 80 of those little medallions.   They ranged from Algonquin Park to Point Pelee, to Long Point Bird Observatory, to Toronto Zoo,  to Arizona Desert Museum, ...and on...and on...and on.   The hat was retired decades ago.   Now I am quite content with a nifty broad-brimmed straw hat that is as light as a feather.   Did you have one of these?

Please comment if you did.

Laskay Emporium at Village of Black Creek...

The Laskay Emporium was moved from the village of Laskay, on Weston Road in King Township, 65 years ago in 1960.   It dated from 1845 in King Township.   In its last days as an operating general store it was owned by the Arbuckle family.   It was transplanted into Black Creek Pioneer Village in North York, at the intersection of Steeles Avenue and Jane, which was renamed Village of Black Creek in 2024.
