Helen Lucas painting finds a home in Aurora

Sun God ~ 1988

My daughter Allison and her husband Rob recently became the proud owners of a painting by acclaimed Canadian painter Helen Lucas, who lived in King Township up until her death on November 27, 2023, at the age of 93.

Lucas's work is best known for large canvasses devoted to colourful flowers, although earlier paintings explored icons of the Greek Orthodox Church, the Virgin Mary, and female sexuality.

Regarding her focus on flowers, Lucas said "I will always be drawn to the beauty and courage of the flower.   I am captivated by it.   Flowers, more than anything else, are so life enforcing.   I have come to truly believe in the healing powers of flowers and their colours in our lives and in our surroundings.   I hope each of my paintings will be continual reminder of the positive qualities each flower represents".

52 degrees centigrade on Delmanor balcony...

Late afternoon heat to much to bear!

Pat and I have had to vacate her late afternoon, west-facing  balcony at Delmanor Retirement Residence on a few days recently because of the heat.   On more than one occasion the temperature has reached over 52C around 4 p.m. in the afternoon  on her balcony...a normally very agreeable place to sit.

Aurora United Church steeple being clad...

Photos by Barry Wallace / Pat Cromie

The Aurora United Church currently being rebuilt on Yonge Street in the centre of town began having its steeple  clad this week.   The pointed top is being clad in metal, while the high tower structure is apparently to be clad in glass.

Amica Aurora Promenade almost ready...

Photos by Barry Wallace

The almost complete Amica retirement residence being built on the west side of Yonge Street in central Aurora, has announced the opening of its presentation centre at 14785 Yonge Street.   The new residence 6-story residence will open in the fall of this year.

The Amica site has been built on property once occupied by the Aurora United Church which burned to the ground 10 years ago.   The Aurora United Church is being rebuilt on its former site and will share the location with the new Amica Aurora Promenade multi-storey building.   The reconstructed church will feature a new large church spire (see belove) that already is dominating the streetscape of the old Aurora downtown on Yonge Street.
