Having switched to three new squirrel-proof bird feeders this winter, we are saving a lot of money on birdseed because the squirrels are no longer able to spill and waste as much seed as they have in years past. The savings on seed have off- set the cost of the new feeders. But suddenly, the matriarch of all our squirrels has the squirrel-proof feeders figured out. The trick she has learned is to hang onto the wire-mesh cage and never put your weight on the wire perches, otherwise everything clamps shut.
